Maharaja Sir Vijaysinhji of Rajpipla (1890-1951) was one of India's most famous racehorse owners. He achieved a unique hat trick of Derbys by winning the first-ever Indian Derby in 1919, the Irish Derby in 1926 and the Epsom Derby of England, the blue riband of the turf, in 1934. The last ruler of the 13-gun salute Rajpipla State, Maharaja Vijaysinhji was a leading light of the Chamber of Princes for many years. His benevolent reign from 1915 till merger with the Indian Union in 1948, was the pinnacle of the 600-year sway of the Gohil Rajputs over the Rewakantha State, which during the British period lay in the Bombay Presidency. These pages capture the exhilarating story of a prince's relentless quest for the biggest prize in horse racing.
