Way back in 2006 M.V. Nadkarni impacted the intellectual world with a classic study on Hinduism that was eagerly received and greatly admired by the reading public. This sequel, Handbook of Hinduism, should command even more attention because it goes much further in discussing not merely the metaphysics, moral philosophy and sadhana in Hinduism but also the egalitarian, liberal and socially engaged aspects of Hinduism, that is as informative as it is profoundly stimulating. Hinduism is seen in a positive light and Nadkarni demolishes the myth that the notorious caste system is an intrinsic part of Hinduism, insisting that the belief that only the Brahmins created Hinduism and the caste system, is sociologically na?ve, historically incorrect and factually wrong. Noting that the dynamism of Hinduism lies in its continuity and change, Nadkarni presents the religion in its ancient and classical as well as modern and contemporary phases with clarity and high objectivity. No less than Swami Vivekananda surely would have appreciated this work reflecting as it does, the essence of what Swamiji once described as "the mother of all religions".
