The year 2017 marks the sixtieth year of Indo-Malaysian diplomatic relations. Taking this as an entry point, the present study analyses the existing state of this relationship and the potential for constructive bilateralism between India and Malaysia as envisioned by their past and present leaders. It examines the history of communication and exchange between the two nations, assesses points of convergence and areas of incompatibilities, and argues that the post-Cold War regional strategic environment as well as India’s earlier ‘Look East’ and current ‘Act East’ policies require the two countries to build closer ties. The author makes a case for Indo-Malaysian bilateralism being a critical factor in a new ‘Asian Century’ where Asia will be a deciding player in world politics. This work is the result of a research project on “India’s Strategic ‘Act East’ Policy-making: A Case Study of Indo-Malaysian Bilateralism” undertaken by the Netaji Institute for Asian Studies, Kolkata. It should be of interest to diplomats and scholars of international relations alike.
