Natural landscape is the environmental litter left behind by a multitude of environmental forces. The natural landscapes are shaped by nature and the humans have no role to play into them. However the designed landscapes are designed by the human beings as per their intellectual and design ability and functional needs. For a healthy and balanced development of a nation, a healthy environment is essential and this beautiful environment is given by the carefully planning and designing the exterior spaces. In the past, Man had constantly been fighting with the nature. He battled with nature in order to produce a semblance of order (French and Mughal gardens). He cleared the jungles, broke virgin soil for cultivation, diverted the courses of rivers, makes canals and embankments for irrigation and converted wasteland into parks and gardens. While in some cases he has produced ugliness by his haphazard, uncontrolled and misdirected action. In other cases he has been able to improve the nature/Environment. He has also gone with the nature while designing Japanese and English gardens of eighteenth century. In the present times the ecological concerns are growing as we have done enough damage to the environment. It is said that the development and the environment should go hand in hand. As the green spaces are known as the lungs of the city, lots of importance is attached with them. If these spaces are not adequately located in the planning of the city, the cities will become the heat sinks and unsuitable for habitation. Many contemporary ailments are no more than the physical evidence of rebellion against physical surroundings and a widening gap between the natural environment, that we yearn for and the artificial environment created by the Architects and planners. (
