It deals with historical development of exploitation of women through prostitution and indecent representation in several forms. It has critically analyzed the provisions of Indian Penal Code regarding procuration and importation of minor girls for the purposes of prostitution. Deficiencies in the existing provisions of Indian Penal Code and Immoral Traffic Prevention Act 1956 have been discussed and remedial measures through amended provisions have been suggested, which might prove beneficial in removing the lacunae. Several other legislations like the Indecent Representation of Women Act 1986, Young Persons Harmful Publications Act 1956, Cinematography Act 1952 and Indian Post Office Act 1898 have also been studied and analyzed and defects in them have been highlighted. It is my conviction that this book will add to the factual and legal knowledge of the persons and researchers in the field of criminal legislations relating to women in India. A large number of works of eminent authors and jurists, relating to prostitution and indecent representation of women have been consulted. But none of these works have tried to make an indepth study of the lacunaes present in the Indian legislations or have suggested any improvement or amendment in the existing legislations. Here an attempt has been made to suggest ways and means to strengthen and bestow the present law an element of deterrence to control the menace of prostitution and indecent representation of women and girls in India.
