Autobiography is an intricate process that requires not only self-discovery through remembrance but also construction of the self through discovery. Women’s autobiography requires a new hermeneutics of the self. Anamnesis ratiocinates various perspectives on how women develop a sense of self and define their selves in terms of gender ideology in the course of revealing some significant aspects of their lives. It cogitates on the cognitive content of gender-genre incompatibility of women’s autobiography and on the dialectics of differences. Anamnesis is a perspicacious communiqué on the quintessential female experience cantilevered in the major women’s autobiographies written since the inception of the genre in the Western as well as in Indian tradition of writing autobiographies along with some theoretical formulations which problematises the notion of selfhood in autobiographies with special reference to some of the Indian women’s autobiographies.
