This book presents an original account of the bryoflora of the Silent Valley National Park in the Southern Western Ghats of Kerala and deals with 212 species and 3 infraspecific taxa belonging to 124 genera, 51 families and 15 orders. Of these, 154 species and 3 infraspecific taxa, 88 genera, 31 families and 11 orders belong to mosses, 3 species, 3 genera, 1 family and 1 order to hornworts, and 55 species, 33 genera, 19 families and 3 orders belong to liverworts. It includes 1 moss new to the bryoflora of India, 6 to that of Peninsular India, 20 mosses and 4 liverworts to that of Kerala and 1 liverwort rediscovered after more than a century. Nomenclature has been updated following the current Code. There are 96 figures and 10 colour plates - 1 colour plate to show the vegetation types, 5 to show the habit and nature of habitat and 4 colour plates to enable easy identification of the species. Figures and colour plates were made by R.D.A. Raja and V. Asha. Synonyms pertaining to India and neighbouring regions are provided which include almost all Indian literature. Species are described in detail mostly based on fresh material. Information on habitat, distribution etc., is provided. Students and teachers of botany, researchers in academic and research institutions as well as those who are concerned in the conservation of these nebulous cryptogams will be largely benefitted.
