A Handbook on Bryophytes with Special Reference to Type Specimens of Liverworts and Hornworts in Indian Herbaria aims to strengthen the knowledge in the field of Bryology which constitutes the study of the second largest group of green plantys on land. The content of this book can be broadly divided into six parts. The first part provides a brief outlook on bryophytes, its recent developments and concepts, habitat preferences, economic importance, ecological role, etc. The Second part provides information on methods of collec tion, preservation, storage, identification, etc. The third part deals with the c lassification and phylogeny of Phyla Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta and Anthocerotophytta. The fourth kpart provides insight on the various requirements, rules and regulations for publishing new taxa, the important dates to remember fotr tyhis kpuropose, the correct abbreviations used for citing names of Indian Bryologists and the frequently used abbreviations and symbols. The fifth part consists of a detailed list of the type speciments of 209 different taxa of Liverworts and Hornworts housed in different herbaria across India. This includes, holotype of 200 taxa, isotype of 32 taxa, 86 paratypes(s), syntype(s) of 3 taxa and a single newly designated lectotype. Finally, a glossary of all technical terms related to bryophytes and nomcoclature has been provided.
